Snapshotology

Snapshotology is the art of taking great photos with simple gear. It's more about seeing photographic opportunities than dragging around a bag of expensive equipment. My name is E.R.Smith and I teach photography to anyone who is interested in acquiring the ability to see photographically. My goal is to simplify the art of photography and give you the skills to enjoy taking pictures. Feel free to comment on my blog or drop me note anytime.

My wife Susan and I own and operate Captured Moments Photography, a professional studio located in downtown Beaufort, SC.

Not Every Picture is a Snapshot.

Beaufort Bridge at Dusk by E.R.Smith
Beaufort Bridge at Dusk, a photo by E.R.Smith on Flickr.

Everyone knows I just love to run around and take fun snapshots. Every now and then you can plan to take a shot that requires a little more planning. I decided to do an evening shot of the bridge from the cannon side of it. I carefully picked the time, which was right at dusk. Another factor here in Beaufort are the tides. Low tide is something I usually avoid. This sort of project requires a tripod so that you can eliminate any blurring in the low light situation. I was on location there for no more that 30 minutes as I tried several variations of the shot. I was rewarded with this image. I love it when a plan comes together.

The Best Camera is the One You Have With You.

Seriously, the only camera that counts is the one you have with you. Sure you can drag that bag of gear around with you everywhere you go, but having a backup pocket camera is priceless. Not only are you more likely to have it when some cool photographic possibility catches your eye, but it changes how you shoot. It's very freeing. I almost always have my trusty Canon G-11 with me for those random moments. There are so many serious compacts in the pipeline that I think DSLR's are on their way out.

Here's an HDR from LT's, where I had lunch for the first time. It was oustanding, my kind of place definitely. I have a little Bogen stand that attaches to my G-11 for just such a situation. I set it on the table and cranked off 3 shots for this HDR.  It's great to have a camera with you.

This stuff doesn't have to be hard!

I run into this all the time: the notion that you need to travel to some amazing photgraphic locale to do photography. Sure traveling to exciting places and shooting is a blast, but on the flip side, you can get amazing pictures just walking around the block. In fact, the more you practice your craft in situations where you don't think there is anything to photograph, the better you will get. The ability to recognize photographic opportunities is what I'm talking about. You need to exercise your photographic vision.

Chase Jarvis says that at any given time, there are 10 great photographs within 10 meters of you.

I took this at the Golden Corral. What do you think?
